A new wave of COVID cases threatened to derail Seoul’s first in-person Fashion Week since before the pandemic, but the faithful fashion crowd is still making its way to the city’s Museum of Craft Art and Han Collection to see the week’s best hybrid collections. Minimalism and streetwear continue to trend in Seoul, with black as the color of choice. Hints of gothic and punk style are emerging as well. Fuchsia—or Valentino Pink PP—is the standout color of the season, but if it’s not your hue try toning it down with pretty pastels in Easter-egg colors. You could accessorize your ’fits with some soft-toned scarves and furs, or do it the Italian way and wear a rainbow of shades in a single look.

From a classic white T-shirt, to high-waisted bootcut jeans, no one styles up a simple wardrobe essential quite like Jennifer Lopez. Even ultra-casual dungarees—which Vogue contributing editor Ellie Pithers aptly describes as “the sartorial equivalent of a hot water bottle”—get the superstar treatment from J.Lo.
Spotted hand-in-hand with her fiancé Ben Affleck (second time’s a charm) in Los Angeles, the newly engaged 52-year-old singer wore a look that was low-key and sexy all at once. A pair of sold-out A.L.C. black figure-hugging dungarees with a basic short-sleeve white T-shirt underneath, but instead of trainers, a striking pair of black Alaïa stiletto shoes to complete the ensemble. Max Mara Geometric sunglasses in tan (she’s on board with the shield shades revival) and a Coach bag (she’s an ambassador for the American brand), were among her accessories.
As wedding bells ring in the distance, J.Lo has been all smiles of late. With that enormous pale green diamond ring (rumored to be 8.5 carats) on her finger, why wouldn’t she be? In her newsletter—which she used to announce her engagement on Tuesday—Lopez explained the reason behind the unique stone: “Green has always been my lucky color and now, for sure, it always will be.”
Since their fall 2018 season, Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy have regularly used their look books as mini movies. The duo is known to cast Hollywood’s finest to model their latest collections. Some famous models who have slipped into their clothes include Grimes, Kirsten Dunst, Chloe x Halle, Yalitza Aparicio, and Gabrielle Union (to name a few). When it came time to cast their new fall 2022 collection then, the pair only wanted to continue this starry energy—and this time around they transformed an exciting mix of actors, singers, dancers, and directors into whimsical ballerinas.
For the Mulleavy sisters, the prospect of casting the right people in their clothes is always just as exciting as the design process itself. “When we do a project like this, it combines the two different aspects of who we are creatively,” says Kate. “Obviously we’re designers, but who we cast in the collection also reflects who we are as directors.” (Notably, the duo directed Kirsten Dunst in the 2017 film Woodshock.) The new fall look book was shot over five days and sees appearances from an impressive range of talent, including Charli XCX, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Natasha Lyonne, Lana Condor, Marlee Matlin, and Janicza Bravo, among others. “We look for people that inspire us and that we can artistically create with,” says Kate. “We approach it in terms of storytelling—looking for people that will bring the world that we’re imagining to life.”
Rodarte’s fall 2022 world was centered around the idea of the modern-day ballerina—a spirit that’s always been present within the label, especially given its signature tulle gowns. (Lest we not forget, the pair also famously designed the costumes worn by Natalie Portman in Black Swan.) “We were thinking about things that were a part of Rodarte and in our DNA,” says Laura. “We wanted to play with [ballerina] silhouettes and a soft pastel color palette.” The design duo had the all-star cast transform into ballerina dancers for a day—practicing their best poses with toe points, extensions, and all. “It was amazing to see how everyone took the inspiration that we had and not only made it their own but took it further,” says Kate.
One of the first people Kate and Laura cast for the project was actor Taylour Paige, the Zola star who has a background in ballet dancing. From there, the duo expanded their horizons and reached out to anyone who’s been inspiring them recently. “So many of the people that we worked with are multitalented,” says Kate. “Someone like Natasha Lyonne, who wrote her own TV show and works as an actor, director, writer, and producer.” Another act that caught their eye was the teenage punk girl group the Linda Lindas. “We’re such huge fans,” says Laura. “The energy that they have is infectious. You can’t help but want to continue to watch them.” One of their favorite parts was pairing the right look with each talent. Some stars like Reinhart embraced a maximalist pink tulle cape, while Joey King went more subtle in a white gown with black lace detailing. “It was fun to treat each look as a mini celebration,” says Laura. “It definitely keeps the energy of the day going, to constantly have a new person to meet and a new character to portray.”
Given it’s now becoming a signature Rodarte move to cast a star-studded roster of talent in its collections, the designers say you can expect the seasons to follow suit. “It’s here to stay—it’s fun that people notice it and talk about it in a different way than a runway show,” says Laura. For Kate, wrangling the one-of-a-kind crew is always the most fun challenge to pull off. “It’s always hard to leave the set behind,” she says. “You’re sad to leave everyone because you’ve enjoyed working together so much. A project like this shows how much people believe in creativity and artistry.”
Designers can be the best representation of their aesthetic, and since the launch of her label in 2004, Tory Burch has embodied the ease and élan of the clothing she creates. Still, in the age of celebrity endorsement, brands can shape their identity through Hollywood’s talent pool. Selecting the right talent to collaborate with has become an art form, but Burch appears to have met her match in Euphoria actor Sydney Sweeney.
Tapped as the new ambassador for Burch’s line of handbags and shoes, the rising star couldn’t be buzzier thanks to her scene-stealing roles on Euphoria and The White Lotus. Still, the fact that Sweeney is at the center of two of the most talked-about television series in recent memory wasn’t what captured the designer’s attention. A performer, producer, martial artist, auto enthusiast, and more, the multi-faceted Sweeney had moxie. “Sydney is one of the most talented and relevant young actors working today, but I am equally inspired by her curiosity and confidence,” Burch shared pre-announcement. “She is unapologetic and empowered in her approach to acting and business.”
Like many in Gen-Z, Sweeney came of age as Burch’s storefront became a must-visit destination in malls across America. Raised in Spokane, Washington, some of her earliest fashion moments came courtesy of Burch. “In third grade, my best friend got us matching Tory headbands for Christmas, which stands out to me so much,” shared Sweeney on the phone from Los Angeles. “I’d never had something so nice; I was so excited I wore that headband every day for weeks. I’m sure my mom thought something was wrong with me, but it was the first nice thing I’d ever had. Growing up in a small town, you’d see Tory’s store [in the mall], and that was where everyone wanted to be able to shop.”
By the time Sweeney moved to Hollywood, Burch’s pieces were a regular part of her wardrobe, but her interest in Burch was about more than clothes. Interested in entrepreneurship from an early age—the actor even created a five-year business plan to convince her parents to support her acting dreams—Sweeney was inspired by Burch’s entire enterprise. “She’s such an incredible businesswoman,” says Sweeney. “I hope to accomplish a third of what she’s been able to build.”
Selected to front the brand’s holiday ads in 2021, Sweeney immediately clicked with the designer and her team. “[Shooting the campaign] just felt very natural and fluid,” says Sweeney. “I was already a big fan of her clothing, and I think that showed, but when I met Tory, we completely hit it off.”
An entrepreneur in her own right—Sweeney’s production company Fifty-Fifty Films, which focuses on highlighting female directors and screenwriters, launched in 2020—she was moved by the philanthropic example set by Burch. The designer’s foundation helps female founders access capital and education resources, opening doors for women. “What’s been inspiring [to me] is how she supports and wants to empower the next generation,” says Sweeney. “I want to give back somehow, so seeing her do that so successfully makes me excited for our partnership’s future.”
In the interim, Sweeney is enjoying immersing herself in all things fashion. Though she still considers herself a jeans and T-shirt-girl off-duty, she’s embraced the power of transformation on the red carpet. “I’ve learned to create characters,” she explains. “I have social anxiety and used to get nervous before or during events. Now I create different personas that [represent] who I’d want to be in that moment, which puts me at ease.”
Thanks to fashion’s obsession with all things Euphoria, Sweeney’s event schedule is full. The show’s visual identity has struck a chord with viewers who recreate Doniella Davy’s ethereal makeup and obsessively chart each piece of designer clothing worn at #EuphoriaHigh. The series’ outsized influence on trends underscores its relevance, but neither Sweeney nor her castmates could have predicted its impact. “None of us knew what to expect from the show, but I think it’s beautiful that we’ve been able to touch people,” says Sweeney. “Each character is so uniquely themselves, and that allows the audience to connect with them, even when it’s through their style.”
This season, the wardrobe for Sweeney’s Cassie proved especially significant, the ups and downs of her emotional rollercoaster reflected in her wardrobe. Cassie’s arc was provocative, but Sweeney found bringing the story to life thrilling. “As an actress, it’s a dream role,” she says. “I’m getting to go deep and to creatively fulfilling places. Sam [Levinson] is such an incredible creator because it allows these characters to go places that people are scared to [approach], but he isn’t. Having the opportunity to bring this to life and affect such a huge audience is incredible.”
At this stage of her career, Sweeney is drawn to projects that push her outside her comfort zone. “My main decision points are ‘is this completely different from other characters I’ve played, and am I scared?’” she says. “You can’t be afraid to fail because if you are, you’re not going to be able to push yourself. Not everything will be perfect, but I know that if I’m challenging myself, I’m on the right path.”
Sweeney’s latest cinematic challenge is director Tony Tost’s National Anthem, a gritty neo-Western where she stars opposite Halsey. Tackling a new genre while sharing the screen with one of the world’s biggest pop stars isn’t easy, but it may not be as daunting as the star’s next fashion trial by fire: the Met gala. “I can’t talk about that, but I’m excited!” says Sweeney, who will be making her debut in a custom look dreamed up by Burch. “It’s a rite of passage. I’ve always seen the Met on TV or in pictures, and I never knew if I’d be able to touch that world. Now I am, and it’s amazing.”
It’s officially sandals season, but there’s another shoe set to compete with your beloved Birkenstocks: the fashion flip-flop. Essentially, it’s an elevated thong-toe sandal that isn’t flimsy or rubbery like your favorite poolside footwear. Rather, it’s sturdy enough for the commute.
Kendall Jenner is the poster girl for fashion flip—she’s worn no less than three different styles since the start of the year. The supermodel posed for an Instagram pic in block-heel Dries Van Notens and Loewe’s sell-out blur tank dress. She’s flip-flopped around in Simon Miller’s Beep sandals and a Jacquemus midi-skirt, and got her Y2K groove on in Coperni’s foamy platforms. (Bella Hadid is another famous fan of the latter.)
The trendiest styles come with an elegant heel or pumped-up platform sole to give you extra height. Team Vogue has long been lusting after The Row’s minimalist Ginza sandals, which have a thickened sole and sleek strap. Editors have also earmarked The Attico’s Selene style, and Gabriela Hearst’s artsy Lou flip-flops, featuring a patchwork rainbow sole, whipstitching, and a crochet upper.
Coperni’s retro takes are made for shoppers after a nostalgic purchase. Almost every look at the brand’s spring/summer 2022 show was paired with platform flip-flops, some of which were adorned with pearly sequins that caught the light as models walked.
There are pairs out there for extrovert dressers, too. Miu Miu’s sporty silver sandals make a case for party flip-flops, as do the studded gold heels by Versace and feather-trimmed styles from Rejina Pyo.
Today, Bella Hadid strutted out wearing a low-key look: no flashes of flesh or slept-on designer digs to be found. Instead, the model opted for a pair of baggy jeans, a pair of Adidas Samba sneakers, and a large sweatshirt that was emblazoned with Strand New York City on the chest. For the uninitiated, the Strand is the iconic New York bookstore that has been in business for over 90 years. During COVID-19, the bookstore struggled, and eventually, its owner Nancy Bass Wyden took to social media to raise funds for the establishment. While Hadid is wearing a sweatshirt, there is a hoodie option available at the Strand for under $35.
Beyond her biblio-minded merch, Hadid is an avid reader. Back in 2019, she Instagrammed her book of choice from what appeared to be a private plane: the 560-page horror novel The Outsider by Stephen King. (The red hardcover went quite nicely with Hadid’s lime green glove and cherry print Louis Vuitton bag). She’s not the only model to proudly display her book choices. Around the same time, her sister Gigi was spotted toting around a copy of Albert Camus’s The Stranger. Kendall Jenner also loves a good page-turner and has recommended both The Houseguest and Other Stories by Amparo Dávila and literally show me a healthy person by Darcie Wilder to her Instagram followers. And let’s not forget Kaia Gerber who has her very own book club. Then, of course, there are those like Emily Ratajkowski who has written her own book, My Body, which has gone on to become a bestseller.
This hasn’t been the first time that Hadid has worn something related to, well, literature. In 2019, she stepped out with an excerpt from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Troilus and Cresida on a dress, a look courtesy of Burberry. While we aren’t sure what is on Hadid’s book list at the moment—hopefully, she’s finished The Outsider by now and has picked something else up from the Strand—she’s wearing her love for reading on her sleeve.
